Laparoscopic Surgery

What is it?

Also known as minimally invasive surgery (MIS), laparoscopy surgery is a modern surgical technique that involves small incisions of up to half an inch on the patient’s body, as opposed to the larger incisions performed in traditional surgery.

How is it done?

Laparoscopic surgery is performed with the aid of a laparoscope -a slender tubular device connecting a micro lens with a video camera- and several other thin devices. Fine tubes or ports are introduced through the incisions into the patient’s body, and through them the small cameras and surgical devices. The surgeon is then able to see and operate into the patient’s inside via a separate video monitor, with a better visualization and without having to open it intrusively.

Laparoscopic surgery is dominant is several surgical areas, and has been successfully carried out in bariatric surgery procedures for several years.
