Gastric Sleeve
| What is it?
Gastric sleeve (GS) surgery is a bariatric surgery restrictive procedure that consists in removing permanently 60 to 80 percent of the stomach. The resulting smaller stomach has the shape of a tube or “sleeve”. How does it work? A gastric sleeve induces weight loss because the stomach’s capacity is reduced, and thus the patient’s food intake is reduced. A gastric sleeve also promotes weight loss because it eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces Ghrelin, the hormone responsible for producing hunger, and thus reduces the patient’s appetite. |
