What is it?

Gastric bypass (GBP) is a bariatric surgery malabsorptive procedure that consists in limiting the functional capacity of the stomach and rearranging the digestive track, in order for food to bypass the normal absorptive process.

This intervention dramatically induces weight loss. On one hand, food intake is reduced because the new functional stomach is smaller; and on the other, less calories are absorbed because food that is consumed is not fully processed in the stomach and small intestine.

How is it done?

In the gastric bypass procedure, the stomach is divided into two parts: a smaller pouch in the upper part of the organ, and a bigger lower remnant stomach.  The smaller intestine is then rearranged so it is connected to both sections of the stomach.

Different configurations for reconnecting the small intestine to both pouches have been developed in the surgical community, leading to different names for different kinds of gastric bypass. The most common gastric bypass is the Roux-in-y gastric bypass.
